Avenged Sevenfold drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan was found dead at his home in Huntington
Beach, California, yesterday. He was 28. Preliminary police reports indicate Sullivan
died of natural causes, but the Orange County Coroner’s Office is investigating his
death. Sullivan helped found Avenged Sevenfold in 1999, and featured on all four of
the band’s studio albums.

“It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we tell you of the passing today of
Jimmy ‘The Rev’ Sullivan,” Sullivan’s Avenged Sevenfold bandmates wrote on their
website. “Jimmy was not only one of the world’s best drummers, but more importantly
he was our best friend and brother. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jimmy’s family
and we hope that you will respect their privacy during this difficult time. Jimmy
you are forever in our hearts.”

After playing Ozzfest in 2006, Avenged Sevenfold memorably beat out Rihanna, Chris
Brown, Panic! at the Disco, Angels and Airwaves and James Blunt for the title of Best
New Artist at the MTV Video Music Awards, thanks in part to their Fear and Loathing
in Las Vegas-inspired song “Bat Country.” Avenged Sevenfold then reached Number
Four on the Billboard Top 200 with their self-titled fourth album. The band
spent the past two years on a co-headlining tour with Buckcherry. The band was reportedly
in the process of recording their fifth album.

Wolfmother have released a new album 'New Moon Rising' & are about to embark on
their biggest tour to date, a national series with legends AC/DC, so they are currently
playing a handful of headline dates around the country with the new lineup.

I managed to secure (last minute) a pass to shoot their show at Enmore Theatre.

In other news, after my first outdoor promo shoot with local band The Amenta, they
are now using one of the shots for their latest tour flyer as you can see below.

Keep an eye out in a few weeks for hopefully new shots of Megadeth, touring with Slayer
in October.

Keep an eye out in a few weeks for hopefully new shots of Megadeth, touring with Slayer
in October.

Last night Sydney got a glimpse of the current gay fashion phenomenon which is Bruno,
Sacha Baron Cohen's alter ego in which he plays the role of a Gay Austrian Fashion
Reporter.

The evening had it's share of controversy (not created by Bruno) with an impersonator
thought to be The Chaser arriving in a stretch pink Hummer & spraying litres of
sauce across the stage/carpet setup before security caught on. That sauce ended up
being Peri Peri, so you can easily work out who this publicity stunt was on behalf
of.

There were not many big names there, however that didn't faze anyone & the crowd
was there to see only Bruno, who arrived on a White Stallion sporting assless chaps & Bruno
dressed in Knights Armour of a different sort, as you can see in the images below.

night, after getting a slight warm-up with The
Living End not long beforehand I was hoping to nail a few great shots.

I organised the pass with the bands manager weeks before the show & confirmed
with him two nights before, course my name still was not on the guestlist, it was
lucky that I took a print out of my emails with management otherwise it would have
been a very early night...this however was not the only problems I'd run in to on
the night.

After scoping out the openers, Heaven Shall
Burn make a great impression, unfortunatly it was red wash fever in terms of lighting
for their set, however their tunes/performance were awesome! Definitely grab a few
of their songs if you can!

The lighting dims and the crowd goes nuts for Trivium,
so much so that the crowd dislodge the front barrier within the first song & all
media are escorted out of the pit straight away, which tops off my night...the lighting
did not kick in for them until song 2-3, so it was lucky that the upstairs area was
empty & we were given access to shoot from there, otherwise I would have come
home with nothing.

Unfortunately no agencies were allowed for The Pussycat Dolls/Lady Gaga, so I'm not
sure when my next show will be, until then take a look at some of the shots from Trivium below.

I was anticipating this show, they put on an awesome set @ Soundwave 2008

Again they came out with a force, unfortunately I was off my game & had a bad
night shooting wise...so the shots below don't do justice in my eyes

Keep an eye out for shots from Craig
Nye & Dave Youdell who were
also shooting last night.

It's been 3 years since Slipknot we're in town & once again they came, and destroyed
the stage.

This time around they had the full production show & a setlist which had
a lot of Self Titled tracks, despite releasing the new album only weeks ago.

Earlier in the afternoon I made my way to Utopia with a decent sized print of my Machine
Head shot of Adam/Rob for the band to sign & Adam was definitely impressed with
the shot, he requested a copy for himself....we'll see if he gets in contact with
me in the next couple of weeks.

Sydonia opened the show with their revised & heavier set list, carving up the
stage for about 20-25 minutes before the first interval which brought on Machine
Head, chants of "Machine Fuckin Head" started straight away & the band (as
usual) brought a mass amount of energy to the table with Rob Flynn getting the
circle pits going every chance he could

Unfortunately a plague of power outages (first of which happened in the opening song)
wreaked havoc on their set & Rob ended up storming off stage with a dictionary
of expletives towards Acer Arena....

After our 3 song limit for MH, we were escorted back stage to leave our camera
gear in a secured room much to our displeasure, instead Jessica &
I remained in the back carpark area where my good friend Dana (Sydonia's Guitarist/Vocals)
was talking with Jim Root (Guitarist of Slipknot/Stone Sour) & I had great
pleasure in discussing random things with him such as their first tour right through
to the smell you get from earrings which is now known as "Schmebob" - I chose
not to bother him asking for a fan photo, figure he would sick of that shit by
now.

By the time Slipknot were ready to come on, the crowd were going nuts...perfect choice
of opening songs - Surfacing & Get This

Crowd pleasers: Liberate, Psychosocial, Spit It Out & of course Joey's Solo on
the hydraulic lifted Drum Kit

Well it's been over a month since my last show (Trivium) and I was keen to bring out
the camera from under the dust & what better time than for the current pop rock
'it' band which are currently hogging up the radio waves - Metro Station.

The crowd was as I expected, packed to the rims with sweaty 15-16yo girls in black,
there to see there hardcore looking but fairy music playing idols....no more than
1 minute in the venue & I was called a gangster for being in a hoodie from an
MCR shirt wearing girly - seems like I was in for a good night

The lack of shooting shows in my results, my reaction times were slow and I couldn't
nail 1 jump shot of Miley Cyrus's brother 'Trace Cyrus' (the dude who ends up in the
b/w singlet) - I won't mention that he gave me like 8 chances to do so...being off
the drummer or keyboardists platform

However given my latest break, I am looking forward to getting some cracker shots
in a few weeks when Slipknot @ Acer Arena comes around at the end of October.

The boys from Florida flew in to Australia for press & thought to put on a one
date show in Sydney considering they flew 13+ hours to be here.

Once again they put on a tight set, which has come to be one of their strengths....

Daysend were their supports for
the night - this was the first time I had seen them live & I must say they put
on a great show...catchy tunes mixed with a great stage presence, I'll definitely
have to catch them again in the near future

Come 9:30 Trivium took to the stage to
the delight of the near capacity crowd in Enmore Theatre, mixing things up with old
& new material from their upcoming album 'Shogun' which is due for release in
late September this year.

Towards the end of their set, the sense of humour broke through from the band - playing
various covers from bands such as Blink 182, Nirvana, AC/DC & even Tim Fogerty's
Midnight Train To Nowhere before ending their set with Anthem & Pull Harder On
The Strings Of Your Martyr.

Apparently they are due back for their Shogun tour mid 2009, so I'll be keen to shoot
them again.

I'd only heard that they were due to play in Sydney on the day of the show from Dave
Youdell & was going to be home alone, so I put in a request to shoot
the show through the promoter and got the approval 2minutes later.

The bus on the way took just over an hour instead of the usual 20-25minutes due to
amazing amounts of traffic congestion, so I missed out on the support band.

Once Escape The Fate took the stage, the lighting was a little dark considering the
lighting rig they had setup for the show...and just to further push our already great
night, the security tapped us on the shoulder after 2 songs instead of the industry
standard of 3 - and what do ya know, the lighting got a heck of a lot better during
the 3rd song!

So we didn't stick around, however I got a few OK'ish shots during the 2 songs

Look out in August for Trivium, Timbaland (if he doesn't cancel) & Underoath live
shots

Dan.

UNSW Roundhouse once again seen the boys from Byron Bay tear the venue apart, like
a fine wine these guys seem to get better with age, stepping up a few notches since
their last major show in Sydney (which was not too long ago I might add)

This time around they were supported by Break
Even, Antagonist & Have
Heart.

After another show tonight @ UNSW, Parkway
Drive will pack up & tour through the US & Europe between July-November.

Last night I had something totally different on the agenda, I was on assignment for
Big Australia to shoot a Red Carpet Event - Jack Black in Kung Fu Panda @ The
State Theatre on Pitt St, Sydney.

Attendees included: Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Rove McManus, Jack Thompson, Damian
Walshe, Daniel Amalm, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, Hilton Dennis, Julia Morris, Tiffani Wood,
Bernard Curry & Ally Pinnock.

While the list of confirmed guests was a lot longer, only a small percentage attended....hopefully
this will not be the last Red Carpet Event I shoot, it was enjoyable to be out of
my comfort zone!

Last night seen a sold out Hordern Pavillion crowd rocking out to the tunes of BFMV,
A7X & Atreyu.

This was the second time in a year that I've been able to shoot BFMV & it was
great to see them bring a bigger stage production this time...the definitely were
the highlight of my night, Atreyu were also good however A7X seemed to lack any punch
so after my 3song limit I exited the building.

Hopefully it will not be long before BFMV head back to our shores, the know how to
put on a great show...mixed with killer riffs & melodic vocals, you're destined
to enjoy

As for upcoming shows, Rogue Traders is a maybe for next week + Jona from IKTPQ is
giving me an AAA pass to cover their sold out farewell tour show @ UNSW Roundhouse,
look forward to some killer shots there.

Korn - they were the band that convinced me to convert from rap to metal, so I was
eager to get the chance to shoot them before they decided to call it a day.

I arrived at about 6pm to find that my pass has not been organised properly, after
several calls/messages to KMW & a print out of my confirmation email an hour passes
& box office give me the photo pass, however Bloodsimple had already been and
gone by this stage.

Unfortunately all the supports had awful lighting, Chimaira being the worst of them
which was disappointing as I was looking forward to seeing them. Not to mention I
also tore a chunk out of my shin while walking in to the pit area, kicked the corner
of the steel security platform...awful sight.

Korn took the stage and all was forgotten, they definitely improved on their last
performance here in Sydney (their show with Disturbed was beyond awful) and the small
crowd that attended went nuts, Sunday night @ the Entertainment Centre & they
could barely manage to bring in 5,000 kids.

Good Morning...

Monday afternoon, going on about 8 days since I moved into the new apartment &
iPrimus are still not providing my with the internet service I pay for! Anyhoo that's
another story

This weekend I had the pleasure in being able to shoot my first 'pop' show, and who
bigger than Celine Dion - she is highly regarded in the industry
as a truly gifted singer & sells out shows around the world. I got the call on
Friday afternoon, so it was a nice surprise for the weekend - especially after I received
an email stating the otherwise 2 weeks ago.

David Youdell & myself arrived
at about 8:15pm ahead of the 8:30pm request time & noticed Getty Images shooter
standing inside the Acer Arena halls to our surprise, we were assuming the traditional
box office meet with the Coppell rep...however after an initial problem with door
security due to our equipment, we made it inside.

Things were a little behind schedule, we made our way inside to the awaiting audience
(whom might I add paid a premium price for front row seats) where we waiting till
about 9:05pm - with a few relieved spectators who questioned the length of our presence
- one song access for this one folks!

Once took the stage & opened with Drive All Night, there was no question that
the crowd were not going to sit around...everyone stood up & started dancing along
with the woman they were all there to see.

To my surprise, Celine puts on a suprisingly energetic performance given the genre
she falls into - I was anticipating a gentle creature to charm the crowd with her
high notes, that definitely was not the case, she puts in as much energy & movement
as a rock act.

Dan

Aussie rockers Grinspoon recently headlined
a show @ UNSW Roundhouse on Mar 7 2008, along side them were Many
Machines On Nine who put on a solid performance which included some new tracks.

I found a nifty tool called PictoBrowser which
I thought I'd try out...seeing as I haven't posted anything in a while. It uses your
Flickr account and creates a slideshow for shots in sets or allocated specific keywords,
I was hoping that it would pick up everything in my gallery, unfortunately it
only allows for 'public' images.

I was pretty happy with some of the shots, UNSW's lighting rig has improved in the
last 6months or so...a little too much red front were used but managed squeeze in
a few regular skin toned shots (can't stand red!)

I won't go in to details, even though it was only yesterday I am sure you have heard
the slander & abuse that the organisers received from all directions after
the event took place yesterday.

I was lucky enough to shoot the festival for the 2nd time running on behalf of Killswitch
Engage, As I Lay Dying & Fasterlouder -
click the photo below to view some of the highlight shots or view them all here

Bands I ended up shooting: Scary Kids, Haste The Day, Plain White T's, Thursday, Bleeding
Through, Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, Alexisonfire & As I Lay Dying.

On the note of AILD - they walked off early after their guitarist Nick copped a glass
bottle to the face & was practically knocked out from the blow. Moments like
these are what ruin festivals & the decision for bands to return....what is the
point of standing in the crowd when a band is playing if your intentions are to hurt/injure
them - I hope the inflictor gets what's coming to him/her!

Sunday February 10 Quaywest Hotel in The Rocks was the venue booked in for the second
Sydney Strobist meet which was organised by J - of whom fronted the costs out of his
own pocket to book a conference room which was used for indoor/studio style photos.

5 models agreed to come along on a TFP basis, all of which appeared to have a fun
day & had some amazing shots produced by some 30 photographers who attended, most
of which brought there own Strobe lighting, Pocket Wizards, Backdrops, Reflectors,
Stands & a huge amount of lenses. All in all I think there would of had to of
been close to $400,000 worth of equipment.

Council approval needed be seeked, waivers drawn up & model releases to protect
from commercial use. A huge amount of organisation was done before the day, however
things went along quite smoothly...everyone kept to the deadlines - of which was 1hr
to move between indoor/outdoor locations, setup lighting & shoot before packing
up & switching to the next location/model.

I'd advise anyone that wants to learn the fundamentals of studio lighting setup to
attend one of these events. While things move along quite fast, there are a number
of individuals with a vast amount of experience which can help you with any questions/techniques.
Everyone that I had talked to was friendly & even went as far as to lending me
a pocket wizard so I could try produce some shots of my own.

I was only able to stay for a couple of hours, so while my time was limited, I think
I learned a fair bit which will help me in future. I'll definitely have to try and
start attending future meets as they are a great way to improve & learn new lighting
techniques, create cheap but awesome Ring Flash's with cardboard or
even just to socialise with those who share the same interests.

Here are a few of the shots I got from the day, head over to the Flickr
Sydney Strobists Group to view other
shots from the day & updates for upcoming meets.

of individuals with a vast amount of experience which can help you with any questions/techniques.

Sydney Strobists Group to view other
shots from the day & updates for upcoming meets.

my pass through Killswitch Engage management to shoot the Sydney show on Sun Feb 24th

And what a killer lineup they have for us this year, definitely one to please hardcore
fans across the nation. Acts which include the likes of: Killswitch Engage, Alexisonfire,
Devine Heresy, Offspring, Incubus, As I Lay Dying, Shadows Fall, Plain White T's,
From Autumn To Ashes, Thursday, Saosin, Bleeding Through & the locals Carpathian.

I covered last years show which was a terrential rain filled day of action. This years
line-up blows last year out of the park however, it is basically a full days worth
of top acts compared to a number of gap fillers last year, thats my opinion anyway.
It is disappointing Byron rockers Parkway Drive did not join the tour again
this year, choosing to hold their own regional tour with 50 Lions instead.

Unfortunately it is looking like I will not be able to take the day off work to do
